This statue of Verulamium Venus is an outstanding example of a goddess from a household shrine.
From 44 BC to AD 400 Her cloak is knotted across her middle and streams out behind her. She holds an apple or pomegranate in left hand and her hair is gathered into two bows. The thumb of her right hand has been restored. The figure may represent Venus or Persephone, goddess of the underworld.
